With the New Moon in Cancer, and Mercury retrograde also moving through Cancer, this period offers the perfect opportunity to reflect upon our maternal lineage and what we may have inherited from our mothers - and the long line of mothers before them- both the blessings and the burdens.
New Moons occur when the Sun and Moon align at the same degree in the sky, symbolizing new beginnings, fresh starts, and the quiet promise of renewal. They invite us to release what no longer serves us and prepare fertile ground for what is ready to emerge.
This introspective time is not just for women, but for men as well. We all have a maternal lineage, and Cancer is the sign that embodies our ancestry, our roots, and the emotional inheritance carried through the family tree.
The Moon feels at home in her own sign of Cancer, making her influence especially strong. She illuminates the hidden, unseen, and often unrecognized emotional complexities that are ready to be brought from the subconscious into the light of conscious awareness - the realm of the Sun.
Mercury Retrograde, also in Cancer, invites us to slow down, reflect, and look back at our emotional patterns and conditioning. It asks us to revisit our relationship with our emotional self, our inner child, and the influence our mother has had upon our lives.
This is a powerful time for deep inner reflection and for acknowledging the old emotional structures that no longer align with who we are becoming.
For me, the Cancer New Moon and Mercury Retrograde are both transiting my 12th house - the final house of the zodiac - representing endings, completion, surrender, and spiritual integration. With Jupiter in Leo still making his journey through my 12th house, he has brought profound wisdom and deeper insight into the intricacies of my maternal lineage, revealing both the gifts and the challenges woven throughout the generations.
My great-grandmother Rosa, an immigrant from Italy, lived in New York City during the Great Depression. She tragically lost her husband in an accident, leaving her to care for and provide for nine children on her own. My grandmother, the eldest daughter, helped raise her younger siblings during those incredibly difficult years. Sadly, she too lost her husband at a young age and found herself living a life that echoed her mother's -widowed, carrying unimaginable responsibility, and walking much of life's journey alone.
My mother was an extraordinary woman who carried the deep wound of losing the most important man in her life - her father. Although she was already married when he passed away, his death profoundly altered the course of her life. In the years that followed, she found herself longing for the emotional and financial support her husband struggled to provide. In many ways, she too carried the quiet loneliness that had echoed through the women before her.
It was no surprise, then, that I found myself living a life that echoed the experiences of the women before me, having lost my dear mother in a tragic car accident not long after I was married. Yet somewhere within me was a deeper knowing that my story was meant to unfold differently. After thirteen years of marriage, I made the difficult decision to walk away. Only years later did I recognize that I hadn't simply ended a marriage - I had stepped outside the ancestral pattern that had quietly shaped the women before me.
Sometimes our soul recognizes the pattern long before our conscious mind can name it.
This past year has been one of profound expansion and healing. As Jupiter has traveled through my 12th house, he has gently illuminated not only the inherited challenges within my maternal lineage but also the incredible resilience, courage, and strength these women carried. Piece by piece, I have integrated these ancestral patterns, allowing the final fragments of this long-held story to find their rightful place.
In doing so, I have reclaimed my own sovereignty - not by rejecting the women who came before me, but by honoring their journey while choosing a different path for myself.
And, in perfect divine timing, I awoke this morning, on the day of this Cancer New Moon, from a dream about my sweet niece. To me, it represented the maternal freedom that now flows through the generations because this ancestral pattern has finally come to completion. It felt like a beautiful affirmation that healing truly does ripple forward.
That dream inspired me to write the following poem - a love letter to the women who came before me, to those who walk beside me today, and to those who will one day follow.
My Ancestral Garden
On this path where garments lay,
Old stories woven in threads of gray,
I walk beside the one who sees,
A mirror of my own memories.
“MOM” she calls me, my heart bestills,
I hear the echoes from over the hills,
The mothers who lived before I came,
The ones for whom I carried the pain.
Roots spiral deep within my soil,
In the garden I gently tend and toil,
The love between us all and she,
Is strong within our matrial family,
“MOM,” she calls me, the name is reborn,
Within me I feel the healing of thorns.
Roots spiral deep within my soil,
I honor the Ancestral Mother’s toil
With every ache that hides from light,
I gather strength, I claim my sight,
Will I wear the truth of me,
In fabric, in form, in memory?
Yes, I say, as I shed the past,
For in this moment, I am free at last,
To live in my garden with rich purslane,
To be the me I now reclaim.
